The thing I worry about most going into the full game is how rhythmic-friendly it will be to players. There are so many ways to play each track, and that's judging from quickplay alone. After getting a taste of what is to come, I can confidently that the value seems to be there. One of the biggest criticisms I have heard since the announcement of Melody of Memory is its $59.99 price tag. Melody of Memory is said to have over 140 songs, but there is no way to tell right now whether or not the co-op song list will be different from the quickplay and what you will experience in the “World Tour” story mode. While I found it arguably easier to have a friend take over as it allowed for breaks from time to time, it is a welcome mode that will seemingly have its own exclusive set of tracks, which I could see upsetting some fans if true.ĭespite the fun time I had with the demo, there are still some questions that I currently have. Co-op brings a new experience where you have a partner to rely on to help you pass a song. I only worry about the amount of variety that will be included the more the game progresses. Magical abilities like Thundaga will defeat enemies from afar while physical ones like Ars Arcanum take down gigantic enemies in your path. Being able to play through each track numerous times on different difficulties can present a challenge, especially for those hardcore players looking to complete a perfect run.Įven as a scrolling rhythmic title, Melody of Memory feels like a Kingdom Hearts game as it implements the traditional hack and slash combat while bringing in other features that the franchise is known for. Even with the lack of tracks, I already found there to be a high amount of replayability. This version of “Dearly Beloved” is simply perfect, and the piece itself has been featured in the ClassicFM Hall of Fame six times, according to KH13.Playing through the demo for Melody of Memory showed me that while being a game centered around music, it still has the raw DNA of Kingdom Hearts gameplay and naturally, it welcomes you with the best version of "Dearly Beloved." There are only six songs featured in the demo, four in single player and two in co-op. It’s melancholy and has plenty of tones within the piece that revolves around the main piano melody that resembles the adventurous and dramatic spirit of the game. The piano then hits alongside the sweeping strings, stirring the heartstrings. It has a sensational held string section at the top of the number with a stunning harp elevating the introduction. Kingdom Hearts 3‘s version sounded momentous as it was the last entry in the Dark Seeker saga, while Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory has an eccentric jazzy take on the familiar song.Īfter much consideration, Kingdom Hearts 2’s version of “Dearly Beloved” is the one that stands out the most. It’s highly adaptable, with each title in the series having an alteration on the piano-led track. “Dearly Beloved” is an awe-inspiring piece that has chronicled Sora’s journey up to this point. “If you need to cry, cry outrageously, especially since music is an expression of emotion.” She also mentioned, “the more expressive you are emotionally the more expressive the music becomes.” You can certainly hear the emotion in this piece by the legendary game composer, and that is why it’s one of the best Kingdom Hearts songs.įor any great JRPG, you need an amazing main menu theme, and the Kingdom Hearts series delivers that in spades. “What I try to remember is not to repress your emotions,” Shimomura said in an interview with Hatalabo (translated by KH13). The playing mid-way through the track in “The Other Promise” version is then intensified, adding to the drama. The flute playing is absolutely tragic as the melody is beautifully charming while the backdrop of the piano is emotionally strained. His theme, otherwise known as “The Other Promise,” shows that perfectly. He is the counterbalance to Sora’s upbeat attitude, but Roxas holds much compassion within him too. He is pulled away from his friends, stuck inside Sora’s heart, and holds anger within him. Roxas’ story throughout the majority of the Kingdom Hearts series is emotional.
